Registered nurse

Registered Nurse Resume Keywords for ATS

Nursing resumes are credential-heavy and unit-specific. Recruiters search for the license, patient population, charting system, and certifications that match the opening.

A registered nurse resume has to do two jobs at once: prove that you meet the clinical requirements and show how you work with patients, families, and a care team. A generic list of nursing skills is less useful than a clear unit history and evidence of safe, independent practice.

Use the posting to decide which terms matter most. The same nursing background can be described through acute care, outpatient, community, or long-term care language, and those phrases are not interchangeable.

Keyword clusters for Registered Nurse resumes

Start with the clusters that match the job post. A term belongs on your resume only when it accurately describes your experience.

Clinical care

  • patient assessment
  • patient care
  • care planning
  • medication administration
  • vital signs
  • infection control
  • triage
  • discharge planning

Systems and credentials

  • Epic
  • Cerner
  • electronic health records
  • EHR
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • RN license
  • compact license

Collaboration and education

  • interdisciplinary team
  • patient education
  • family communication
  • care coordination
  • documentation
  • quality improvement

Use with judgment: a keyword list is not a script. If you have not used a tool, held a license, or owned an outcome, leave it out or describe the transferable part honestly.

How to use these keywords without stuffing

  1. Read the job post first. Highlight repeated tools, skills, credentials, and outcomes. Those terms matter more than a generic list.
  2. Put the strongest terms in context. Use them in a summary, a skills section, and at least one experience bullet when true.
  3. Keep the human sentence. A bullet should explain what you did, for whom, and what changed. Keywords support the evidence; they do not replace it.
  4. Check the extracted text. Run the resume through the browser checker and confirm that the important terms survived parsing.

Example summary to edit

Registered nurse with [unit] experience providing patient-centered care to [patient population]. Skilled in assessment, medication administration, EHR documentation, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.

This is a writing example, not a claim about your background. Replace every bracket or placeholder with a real detail, and delete anything you cannot discuss in an interview.

Example bullet formulas

  • Assessed and monitored [patient population] on a [unit] unit, documenting changes and escalating concerns to the care team.
  • Administered medications and treatments according to policy while educating patients and families about [topic].
  • Maintained accurate EHR records in [system] during high-volume shifts and supported handoffs to the next care team.

Keep the structure, not the placeholder. A useful formula is: action + object + method or tool + result or scope.

ATS notes for Registered Nurse resumes

  • List your RN license and state, and include a compact license only if you actually hold one.
  • Name your EHR system in the experience section as well as Skills. Many nursing recruiters search for Epic or Cerner directly.
  • List only current certifications. Never imply that a certification is active when it has expired.
  • Protect patient privacy. Do not include names, record numbers, or identifying details in bullets.

Questions about Registered Nurse resume keywords

Should I put my nursing license on my resume?

Yes, if you are licensed. Include the credential, state, and license number only if the employer asks for it. A compact license should be listed only when you hold one.

How do I show EHR experience?

Name the system in your experience bullet and explain what you documented or coordinated. A skills-list mention without context is weaker than a clear example.

Can new graduates include clinical rotations?

Yes. Label them as clinical rotations, include the unit and patient population, and focus on what you were allowed to do under supervision. Do not present a rotation as paid employment.
